The benefits of hot and cold
by Nicole McNamara
I am a huge fan of saunas and cold plunges. There is something about doing them together that puts me in a euphoric state. The combination can fall under cleansing and nourishing because of all the health benefits.
This duo of sauna and cold plunge originates from ancient nordic tradition. There are many different ideas on how often and how long to sit in a sauna and cold plunge. I think the Finnish had it right when they said stay in the sauna until you feel hot and jump in the cold for a minimum of 30 seconds. Others say a 15-20 minute sauna and an ice bath/ cold shower for 3-5 minutes.
The key to enduring either of these activities is to always return to your BREATH. Your breath will save you! When your mind is telling you it’s too hot or too cold go back to your breath. I like to inhale for 3 counts and exhale for 6.
Ok… now for the why! Why should you start implementing saunas and cold plunges?
- Reduces inflammation
- Improved blood flow and circulation
- Elevated mood
- Detoxing Power: The hot and cold plunging technique has a way of triggering lymphatic circulation. This allows for body waste to be eliminated and for a “flushing” process to have a detoxifying effect on the body.
- Eliminate soreness after intense physical activity
- Rejuvenates skin
- Increased immunity
Remember if you do not have access to a sauna and cold plunge that’s ok. You can easily implement this beneficial combo by making a commitment to making a minute of your daily shower cold. Connect to your breath and bring on that cold water. You will feel so refreshed and energized money back guarantee!
