Real Life Fun By Dr. Lori
As I write this note on “fun” I am filled with gratitude at being able to write and share with you about these different concepts. This to me IS fun! Writing, working, painting, drumming, dancing, gardening, cleaning, studying, learning…many things other people might not consider even a little bit fun. I feel so fortunate and blessed that when I really take a deeper look at my life, I realize most of it really IS fun! It’s not as if my life is not serious and always lighthearted, amusing and entertaining, (though I think if someone were to do a reality TV show on my life it would actually be pretty comical much of the time), it’s just that I perceive it as fun! I think my point of view is, “ok either be dragged down by this or that, or have fun with it, be amused and curious! Why not?”
I honestly sometimes feel a little sad, even guilty, about how wild and fun my life is when I look around and see people having a hard time and complaining that they have no fun. Then I pause and look at my life and realize that I actually do have a hard life a lot of the time, it’s just a matter of how one looks at it. I watched a funny movie a long time ago called “Punch Line” about a woman who decided she wanted to be a stand-up comedian. She tried all these jokes that didn’t get much of a chuckle, and then she just started talking about her life and people were hollering! Maybe taking ourselves so seriously isn’t so good for our hearts. Heavy hearts might contribute to high blood pressure, heart attacks and arrythmias. Today just for a moment ask yourself, how can my heart be a little lighter right now? What would fun look like to me at this moment? We have some fun planned at our gathering on Sunday 2/15! Love to see you there!
Fun By Nicole
This might actually be the hardest theme for me to write about. I’ve had to spend a surprising amount of time really investigating this word, because I’ve realized that fun is not the same thing as play. You can play a game and lose and that’s not always fun. You can do something lighthearted and still feel drained. So what is fun, really?
And of course, the answer is different for everyone. But have you ever actually paused to ask yourself what fun means to you?
For me, fun looks a little different than what’s often advertised. Learning is fun for me. Researching, studying, building, thinking deeply, working toward something meaningful, that’s genuinely fun. So it’s always a little funny when people say, “You need more fun in your life,” because I sometimes wonder… what if what I’m already doing is fun? Does something stop being fun just because it’s serious? Or quiet? Or productive?
Some people find fun in going out, being loud, being social, staying busy. Others find it in staying home, drinking tea, and reading a really good book. Neither is more valid than the other.
I think the real work here is giving ourselves permission to define fun on our own terms. As long as your version of fun doesn’t harm you or anyone else, you’re allowed to own it. You don’t have to fit into society’s version of what fun is supposed to look like. You don’t have to justify it. You don’t have to explain it.
So maybe this is my shortest entry yet, but the invitation is simple:
Figure out what fun means to you.
Be okay with that answer.
And then, as best you can, honor it daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. However it looks. However quiet. However loud. However unconventional.
It all counts!!!
